Socrates and Glaucon long ago discussed the value of having guardians of immaculate integrity to protect our states and, although aware of the prevalence of the noble lie, thought the concept of appointing a guard over the Guardians to be absurd – but it wasn’t, and it still isn’t. We see the need everywhere: In banks; in hospitals; in schools; in governments local and global; in businesses large and small. Everywhere we look we see the need for watchmen. Indeed we are constantly reminded of that need as we live with the ramification of not watching over our guardians in the wars that never end, the unerring decline in educational standards, and in the recent collapse of a bubble based economy.
An early move by all rogue administration is to take control of the media: Hitler was quick in that field as was Bush and Cheny seventy years later. Rogue states and religious orders ban comment and limit information in order to maintain control because the basis of their administrations are not, in themselves, legitimate. Reason and truth are nowhere to be seen because they are overshadowed by dogma and propaganda. George Bush once publicly stated, “You’re either with us, or with the terrorists.” Islamists believe you are either with them, or you are an Infidel: a person of no value. Christians and Jews hold similar views: although they are not so vehement in their opposition to comment as are the CIA, NSA and Islamists.
Clearly open debate and the opinion of the majority should prevail and we have the tools for the job. We have Facebook, Twitter, and the whole blogosphere for debate; we have the courage of the British Guardian, the German Der Spiegel, and the New York times to publish, and we have the receptors such as WikiLeaks to which to report. Over and above all that we have software to measure and analyse and templates on which to build our opinion polls and form bases for our conclusions. Any attempt, any attempt, to circumvent these essential tools created for the people, by the people should be shouted out, screamed out, and yelled from the front pages of every self respecting news agency in the service of humanity..
We have talked of this before in The Wind Just Changed, and in Northeast Monsoon, and will, no doubt, talk of it again, and again, and again, ad infinitum until the control freaks, dictators, and the excessively ambitious learn a little humility.
